"Happy New Year" is one of the Happy Tree Friends Break shorts. This short reuses the intro and closing sequence for the Happy Tree Friends & Friends series with new scenes showing the titular greeting on the projected screen and the fallen chandelier's impact on the audience visible. Thus, it skips the curtain-opening scene entirely. It also removes the "MIDNIGHT SHOW TONIGHT" text from the movie theater's sign on the first scene showing the building. Another difference is that this short is presented in HD widescreen format.

This short was mistakenly placed in the Blurbs playlist during the 2012-2014 iteration of the official Mondo website.

Plot[edit]

Various Happy Tree Friends are present at the movie theater. A van suddenly crashes into Russell and Flaky. Cuddles is relieved to be safe until he is smacked by the van door kicked open by Lumpy, who is in a rush to bring the film roll into the theater. Inside, a glass chandelier is becoming unstable while a popcorn-bringing Giggles takes a seat to join Petunia, Nutty, and Toothy right below it. Meanwhile, Lumpy places the film roll into the projector. As "Auld Lang Syne" plays as background music, a title card showing various corruptions of the "Happy New Year" greeting is shown in quick succession:

The music eventually dies down mid-way as the movie itself suddenly ends. The chandelier has fallen onto the audience, killing them all. As for Lumpy, the film ends up wrapped around his body, which is eventually sliced into pieces by the film.

Fates[edit]

Deaths[edit]

  • Russell and Flaky are crushed against the movie theater by Lumpy's van.
  • A glass chandelier falls into Petunia, Nutty, Giggles, and Toothy.
  • Lumpy is cut into pieces by the film wrapped around his body.

Survival rate[edit]

  • Number of surviving main characters: 11
  • Number of dead main characters: 7
  • Total rate: 63.64%

Destruction[edit]

  • Lumpy's van crashes into the movie theater's wall.
  • A glass chandelier becomes unstable and falls onto the audience seats.

Animation errors[edit]

  • In general, much of the animation errors for "Happy New Year" is a consequence of converting a lower resolution animation into a widescreen one, resulting in glaring oversights that are normally covered up by the narrower screen size.
    • On the first shot, on the right side of the movie theater, one of the distant trees is mistakenly layered in front of another meant to be on the foreground. This mistake is overlooked in the original Happy Tree Friends & Friends intro as another tree in the foreground partially obscures these two trees, while in this short, said tree is placed further right to fit the empty space resulted from the widescreen format.
    • Mole disappears before the screen pans past him completely.
    • Sniffles disappears prematurely.
    • Cuddles' dropped skateboard disappears into thin air.
    • Disco Bear's animation remains on-screen when it was originally out of frame, causing him to appear to clip into the wall in front of him.
  • Lifty and Shifty's pupils are mistakenly colored white. This mistake also applies in Happy Tree Friends & Friends.

Trivia[edit]

  • Splendid and Flippy are the only main characters (at the time) to not appear in this short. Lammy and Mr. Pickels were introduced around 5 years since Happy Tree Friends & Friends aired, so they do not count.
  • Despite the edits removing any relation to Happy Tree Friends & Friends, said series' logo remains visible on one of the movie posters.
  • Two movie posters feature Buddhist Monkey and Mole (as he appears in Mole in the City).
